Family Matters, part 2
After Damian fights him for a while Helena takes the wolfman down with her patented crossbow in the back. We then get another cute moment where the two call each other brother and sister, and she gets him to agree not to tell Bruce about her existence.
Meanwhile in Africa, the Republic of Congo because it’s so rare we need to enjoy that it’s not just a country of “Africa”. After a cute moment of Kara petting an elephant she uses her supervision to spot a similar-looking dish. Who is guarding the dish is a little more, troublesome. Because instead of wolves we get something far more disturbing, Child Soldiers!
It’s not done disrespectfully, but its inclusion is just a little weird as unlike say the Take Back the Night rally of previous issues, no point is really made about this. If you’re being generous it could be drawing a parallel to the fact that Apokolips also uses Child Soldiers (both Mister Miracle and Big Barda were raised from youth to fight for Darkseid). But apart from a Boom Tube, which takes the child soldier to who knows where we don’t know for certain that Apokolips is involved. Power Girl isn’t overly violent despite being hit by a powerful high-tech laser gun, she melts their other weapons and seizes the high-tech gun but doesn’t hurt any of them beyond using her super breath on them. It’s not bad, just a weird bit of real life in a superhero comic where the other two are fighting werewolves.
Apart from that weirdness, it’s a solid comic it’s building a mystery and moving things along, without yet giving us any answers to what’s going on, despite its claims it’s a two-part story it’s really something that will rumble along for more issues to come!
I haven't read many comics with Damian, but I got the gist a him very easily and the dynamic with him and Helena was pretty great. I'm gonna need to dig up your coverage of the previous issues. Good stuff.
