Justice League of America #171
Cover Dated: October 1979
Released: 5th July 1979
From the very splash page, we know what we’re getting, a murder mystery in space! (I mean also the cover but you know what I mean). We then get to the classic one-page sum up of Earth-1 and Earth-2, with the two apparently having some kind of yearly meeting alongside saving the universe. It would explain how each other Earths knows about the other villains but they must be pretty tedious things.
Luckily we miss the meeting and cut to the after-party and we have to talk about Zatana’s outfit. When she joined ten issues ago in #161 she when from her classic suit to a catsuit and Dracula cape, along with her hair tied way up. It’s one of those costumes that if I didn’t know who it was I’d be perfectly fine, and to be honest I didn’t recognize her until she was identified by Power Girl of all people. Oh, and it’s not the costume of Identity Crisis, that comes way later.
Chatting with Power Girl and “our” Hawkman Zatana is happy to accept Kara’s complementation on handling the meeting, being the current chairperson, and Hawkman pointing out that only by being the best individual would she be allowed to join the JLA. It’s actually a very cute moment and Hawkman earns the little kiss on the check he gets. Power Girl even seems pretty happy about the whole thing, musing that Zatana has that effect on people. Now I’m curious about if and when Zatana have any adventures together, in the manner of Kara and Helena adventures that are coming very soon…
Talking of Helena is talking to Earth-1’s Batman which must be awkward considering that it has been only a few days since the Earth-2 Batman, her dad died. Which to be fair they give a full-page conversation of two discussing his death and Batman showing genuine emotions over it all, and Helena just wanting Uncle Bruce to hold her. Cute might be the word for the issue, but it’s really nice.
We also get Mister Terrific, the original one, talking about coming out of retirement due to certain events/ Apparently he saw his old Nemesis, the Spirit King, steal something from the Gateway University he works at before disappearing into thin air. He tracked them down and apparently it has something to do with why they’re all here and it’s going to cause one of them to become a traitor!
We have Dr Fate and the other Hawkman about to compare notes whilst the two Lanterns nick some snacks and talk about how they are, apparent;y Hal is driving a Truck which is a part of his life I didn’t know about to until now. Finally, we get Supes thinking how he needs to talk to Kara now that she’s “older”, or getting on which is probably a worse turn of phrase as she can only be in her twenties thirties top. Though the point is to show she’s not there for what happens next. Remember we’re in a murder mystery here!
Then a hole is blown in the side of the satellite, enough to suck out the atmosphere and apparently put everyone at risk. Checking out the hole Supes find the body of Mister Terrific floating outside the station, but for now, we get several pages of the crew fixing the hole. We then get a definitive diagnosis that he’s dead whilst Barry and Helena try to work out if it was a planned explosion or just metal fatigue. Zatana does some magic on a metal fragment, that looked more like a gun a minute ago, to try and find out what happened. She’s attacked by some mental force but is saved by Dr Fate doing his cool ankh powered magic. Power Girl catches her and Batman determines that she’s in some kind of coma. A quick check of the entire satellite by the Flashes finds no one else is on the orbiting HQ meaning one of them must have caused the murders!
Obviously, this is the setup of the whodunnit, so it all depends on how everything solves next issue. I think it’s probably a simple possession plot, but we’ll find out in #172. But it has a lot of cute moments between the two groups so even if the resolution is botched I enjoyed this one as a stand-alone issue.
